Purchasing New Computer. The great debate, Laptop or Desktop?

If you’re reading this you are thinking about it. I think most hardcore computer users already know what they want and in fact they probably already have the desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone just because that is the way of their world. That is me to a “T”. But, for what I will call the, “casual user” or the “new user” such as Mom and Dad or Grandma or Grandpa; or just someone who is “technically challenged” what’s the right choice? Well, there is no one size fits all answer. I will try to help you take some of the guess work out of this dilema.

Desktop

For the most part it is bigger and takes some where to house it. It needs a desk, a place to put the desk and can it get the right type of connections needed for today’s internet speeds. Most people who like the desktop already have one. Most new desktops cost more to purchase today than the laptop.

Advantages:

1. Having that desk in a room can be your place to spend time alone and you have the excuse, because the computer is in there.

2.  If you are a gamer and need some big speeds you want the computer to be hardwired.

3.  Cause you’re replacing the “Beige thing your daughter gave you”

4. Because the keys and screens are too small on laptops.

5. Because you are on the computer for long periods of time and laptops tend to get very hot.

Con’s:

1. Cost. New desktops have better flat screen monitors and higher end drives like CD/DVD and even Blu-ray.

2. Space. Need a place to park it.

3. Can’t move it at will to another room.

4. How is it going to be connected to the internet?

Laptop

Advantages:

1. Cost. for $300 to $600 you can get a pretty good laptop, not a little netbook.

2. No special space is needed. You can hide it or put it away when you’re not using it.

3. It can be used in any room of your house, plus you can take it with you as long as you can get a WiFi connection. Lots of restaurants, libraries, and hotel’s have free WiFi.

4. You can connect a wireless mouse and key board if you like to it. There are even docking stations so you can use it on a big monitor. Of couse these cost more money.

5. You can sit in your favorite chair talk, play games, catch up with your friends and family on FaceBook and watch your favorite show . . . all at the same time.

Cons:

1. Too small to see the screen. Although there are some pretty big 17 inch laptops.

2. Keyboard is too small and doesn’t have a number pad. Bigger laptops have full sized keyboards with number pads.

3. Trackpad are too hard to use. Practice, practice, practice. You will get better. Until then hook up a mouse.

4. They get too hot. This is true. Avoid laying on rugs and on your lap for long periods of time. You can also get a laptop pad. There are even ones that have cooling in them.

5. They break easier. Yes, this is very true. Special care is needed to keep them working properly. They are not as “kid friendly” as a desktop. Most adults should not have an issue with taking care  of them unless you like dropping food, drink, cigarettes on them. In that case go for the desktop and cover that keyboard. Note: There are keyboard covers for laptops too.

Summary:

Overall I hope this helps. I gave my parents a desktop once and they ended up giving it away. They got the bug again for a computer and I really felt the laptop was a better way to go. I set up their wireless and gave them some lessons. I got lots of phone calls for about 2 months and they became less and less.

I lean more towards the laptop for more flexibility and cost. As far as operating systems. I look at the overall picture. If a person is new and is not a hard core gamer, if they are willing to spend a little more money . . . go for the Mac. That is a whole another discussion though. Windows computers. I think Windows 7 is a very good operating system. STAY AWAY FROM VISTA. Yes, it’s that bad. I can’t tell you how messed up it is. I would not go for used, unless it is a Mac less than 3 years old or a Windows less than 2 years (with Windows 7). XP is okay but, only if the computer is less than 2 years. Do your homework. If you get one for free and it has Vista, get someone to put Windows 7 on it. It is worth it.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Are you secure on FaceBook?

Well, are you secure on FaceBook? The easiest way to tell is to log into FaceBook and if you see in your URL (the web address line in your browser) does it have the “http://” at the beginning or do you see a lock and then “https://“? If you see the https then you are secure, if not here is how to get secure:

After being logged in FaceBook go to the top of your page and you’ll see in the upper right hand side the work “Home” to the right of that you’ll see an arrow.

1. Click on that arrow and you should see and click on “settings”

2. To the right you should see “Security” (it is under General). Click on that.

3. You should be in the secured setting settings page. The first on the list should tell you if your secured setting are disabled it should say:

Secured Browsing           Secure browsing is currently disabled    edit”. Click on the “edit“.

4. Then you should see: “Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) when possible” checkmark the box and then click save changes.

Now your secure when your on FaceBook surfing, when there is a secure site. Again you will see that lock in the URL at the beginning and the “https”.

FaceBook spends a ton of money making sure you’re not spammed and secure online. They know you need to feel safe using their site.

If you need additional help refer to the “Help” at the bottom of the FaceBook page.

The Cure for the Common Cold???

Don’t you just hate getting sick? I do.  That full blown cold sucks even more. Can’t breath, head hurts, very sore throat too. Then you’re going to Walmart and buying anything to make it less miserable. It’s a full blown chemical assault.  The pills. The nasal sprays. Cough syrups and lozenges.  The tissues. The chicken soup and whatever just to make it through that period that could last up to 7-14 days of misery.

What if I told you I think I have found the closest thing to the cure? First thing I have to tell you is, I am not marketing any products as of yet, So am not making any profits from telling you this. It is just something I have tried and seems to be working and I wanted to share out of kindness of my heart.  I used to get at least two full blown colds a year  and the flu too.

Well, what I have found that is working takes a daily commitment though. I must be done without fail, every single day. It is not a total cure, but it is worth the effort and commitment.

I take these three vitamins/ herbs daily

For Cold Prevention:

1 tablet- Echinacea-Golden Seal Complex. I do increase to 2 tablets if I feel any litte scratchiness in my throat or a little sniffle.

1000 mg- of Vitamin C. Which I’ll take 2 -500 mg a day tablets. I’ll increase to 1500 mg if I feel anything remotely close to a symptom.

For Flu prevention:

Take 5000 IU of vitamin D3 daily.

Since I have been doing this for the last three years I have not had a full blown cold or flu.  No more chemical warfare, so I am never taking any of those things I mentioned above. If I do get a slight sore throat or a sniffle, it is gone in a matter of 1-2 days if that. So far this has been working for me like I said for the last three years.

So it might not be the “CURE” but,  I do find it a lot better than going through that misery.

Now, I have to put this disclaimer in here for people who don’t use their brains. If you get sick you may have to see a doctor. Be careful if you have allergies to anything I mentioned and don’t mix herbs and vitamins with any drugs without consulting a doctor. Common sense people.

AT&T u-Verse: Wireless Receiver

AT&T u-Verse just recently introduced their wireless set top box wireless receiver. You may have seen the commercials saying you can now move your TV around to any location of the room or a different room in your house. Now you can have have that TV in the garage and move it into the guest room when guest are there. So now you don’t have to pay for a receiver that is only going to be rarely used.

Using the box is the same as a regular wired receiver. It incorporates a WAP (wireless access point) that plugs into the Residential Gateway and uses a special bandwidth that is not regularly used in neighborhoods to prevent interference. It does have some limited use right now. The maximum amount per gateway is two wireless receivers and it can only be used with the gateway version 3800 or the 3801. It can not be used right now with the iNID units. Hopefully they will be able to expand these limitations soon. So far the receivers are going over well and the customers enjoy the lack of cables or wires needed to operate the receivers. Also with the flexibility to be able to move around the TV location to almost anywhere in their house, is a huge plus.

The receivers work exactly like the regular set top box receivers. There is not a wireless DVR yet. So to use the Total Home DVR system with the wireless receiver you would still need to wire the actual DVR.  Since all receivers can record, play back and pause live TV from any location, the location of the DVR is not as critical as it used to be. A technician can further explain this.

Should Apple Really Worry About Kindle Fire?

Why should Apple worry about it? Kindle Fire will cut into the over all tablet market with that GREAT price point, but a serious iPad customer is not even going to consider purchasing one. It is like me saying, do I buy a Netbook or MacBook Air. We can’t compare the two. If you are comparing them it is on price only, not BEST product. I’ve used a Kindle Fire and have one and I have an iPad I don’t even want to use the the Fire. It is for one of the Kids. I think Amazon is doing the right thing to break into the tablet market or is it really the APP market that they are after? Of course it is. They are actually losing money on the Fire. So what percentage of the iPad market are they going to steal? Very little. I think they will steal more of the Windows tablet market overall.

How do I find more time?

I wonder sometimes is there a way to do this? Time is such a valuable part of our lives. I for one sometimes have an issue with it. If only I could manage it better. We get all the latest books, information, and gadgets to help, but it doesn’t seem to work. You just have find time to learn and use them, and then after that you end up just creating more things to do. Yes, it increases the the productivity of the individual, but that is it point . . . it is all coming from one person.  I have had the attitude if you want to get things done, you have to do them yourself. I have also thought I could save tons of money and if I learn how to do it, I will save money. If only I could clone myself.  I am here to tell you, I am so wrong. That’s right honey, I said it.

I am learning that the biggest time saver is to find others to do it for you. You have find the best like minded people who want to progress and move the agenda just like you. The biggest issue I find is “trust”. Can I trust this person? Will they meet the deadlines? Will they be totally committed to the goal? What if I pick the wrong person? What if they are just here to steal my ideas, or rip me off? I might happen, but if you deal with it quickly, you will survive. I have managed people and always want to give the people I have worked with the fair benefit of the doubt and  a chance to be a part of the vision. If, after discussing it with them they don’t live up to our expectations and we don’t don’t come to an agreement or understanding, then we may have to part ways. I admire people who admit they can’t do it and offer to quit, but then again I have seen people who are great at something, but lack the confidence to make it happen and need the push and encouragement to succeed. It is all a process of getting the best people in the best places for their skill set.

As a manager of people I have always strived to have a great, fun workplace. After all, people have to work. If is great and fun place to come to, then they’ll want to be there, and give their best. I admire great customer service and companies that create that type of work environment. Look at Apple, Zappo’s or even the Pike Place Fish Market, they look like great places to work, because of the created environment.

The other things people like are open and honest communications, great training and to be in the know. They want to be apart of something great and successful, to be known they are on the team.

They also want a clear idea what’s in it for them. Let’s admit it, we’ve all had or had that feeling that employers are taking advantage of us. As an employer you want to get the most out of people and as an employee you have to feel you are taken care of. Money is only a part of the aspect, but it is important. That’s why I like bonuses when achieving goals.

Building a Team is the best way to get started. Usually one person starts the vision, but is important to find a mentor and some close people you can trust to build on your foundation of  your vision. They have to want to be a part of something great. You can’t succeed if you don’t try. You’ll never know if it could have been if you don’t follow through with your dreams. You will make some mistakes, but if you stay on course you will achieve your goals. You will have to trust the advice of people, but first you must understand where and who it coming from. Filter the positives and the negatives and make sure it  aligns with your goals.
